Gigabyte Touch Note M1028

We have been seeing a lot of new trendy laptops these days. Other than boasting of higher specs and powerful components, the touch screen and screen mobility has become readily apparent and noticeable. Gigabyte showed this to us when they unveiled their initial M912 and now they are coming up with a new one in the M1028.

the Gigabyte Touch Note M1028 has an 10.1-inch swiveling touchscreen, comes with up to Intel’s 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor and has a 160GB hard-drive. Connectivity includes WiFi a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, and in the case of the M1028G there’s 3.5G and WiMAX connectivity. All four run Windows XP Home, have three USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot, and there’s a choice of two batteries: a 4,500mAh 4-cell pack or a 7,650mAh 6-cell pack. Weight with the former is 1.3kg, while with the latter it’s 1.48kg.

Four versions of the convertible were announced, two – the M1028M and M1028G – with a WSVGA 1024 x 600 display, and two – the M1028X and M1028P – with a WXGA 1366 x 768 display. Each has 1GB of DDR2 memory (2GB maximum) and the Intel 945GSE graphics chipset, except for the M1028P which has the HD-capable GN40 chipset.

No word on pricing for the Gigabyte tablets or which models we might see in the US and when. Still, our brief hands-on with them suggested they have very usable keyboards and responsive touchscreens, and the extra real-estate over the original M912 is welcome when you’re dealing with bigger on-screen buttons for your finger to poke at.

Logitech Z-5 Omnidirectional PC Speakers

PC Speakers would certainly be the last thing that people would spend for. Although some people still have some brand preference such as Altec Lansing and Labtec, Logitech has joined the fray with these new Omnidirectional PC speakers to perk up sound for gaming and multimedia playback using the traditional PC.

These omnidirectional speakers use the same technology that is incorporated in today’s hi-fi home theatre systems to produce real life surround effects. The Logitech Z-5 speakers use forward- and backward-firing drivers to transmit sound evenly in all directions.

This means the person sitting in the corner will experience the same level of fidelity, depth and bass as the person sitting in the centre or sides feel. Whether you are listening to your favourite track or watching movie, the Z-5 makes sure that you get bass rich sound vibes with minimal distortion at every place in the room.

The brand may direct you towards interface devices and this product may seem experimental. But if you think about it, evening the sound output seems to be a catchy twist that this speakers have to offer and if you really want to spruce up your PC sound playback, check it out and get something different for your audio requirements.

Samsung NC20 Notebook Unveiled

Samsung is not really a major player in the world of notebooks but apparently this new development that they have released in the market is bound to get them noticed. Samsung has apparently come up with a 12.1 inch notebook to adopt VIA’s hot, hot Nano platform, announcing today the 12″, fat-batteried NC20.

The demand for laptops has evidently been growing. Most people are turning to mobile solutions to aid them in their daily needs, both personally and professionally. And with these added features that Samsung has infused in their new line of laptops, don’t be surprised if people suddenly demand for them despite the price that many are expecting to hit the roof.

Catered to a niche well above its 10″, Atom-powered NC10 stablemate, the NC20 is has decidedly un-netbooklike specs. Aside from the 1.3GHz VIA Nano ULV U2250 processor and the choice of XP Home (wise!), the list is straight laptop: 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD (with an SSD option), a generously resolved 1280X800 LCD, a 6-cell battery that promises more than 6.5 hours of operation and an uncompromised set of ports, adapters and inbuilt accessories. No price has been announced yet, and therein lies the rub: it’s almost certainly going to be expensive.

    Poly i750SLI Mainstream Desktop PC

Here is a new release from Polywell Computers. It borders along the lines of being a gaming to a standard PC. The Poly i750SLI makes use of this technology to put in two GeForce 9500 GT graphics cards.

The problem here is that the two graphics cards aren’t really any better than a single GeForce 9800 series card. Gamers would be better served by switching it to a single card configuration to so they can upgrade to a second card at a later time for additional performance.

Powering the Poly i750SLI is an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processors. This is a good and fast processor that works well for those who do not multitask or use multithreaded apps. That is fine for gaming, but since the system isn’t the best suited towards gaming, the system probably would be better off with a quad core processor. At least the system comes with 4GB of DDR2 memory to let it run smoothly.

Regardless, it looks like a powerful desktop alternative that PC desktop users are bound to consider. Containing most of the basic components that a new computer buyer would want, it looks like a lot of bonuses (depending on the actual intent of the PC buyer) will come in handy and flexible.

    Specs:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Dual Core Desktop Processor
  • 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory
  • Three 500GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drives
  • 20x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe
  • Dual NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT Graphics Cards with 512MB in SLI Configuration
  • Intel HDA 7.1 Audio with Logitech S-120 Stereo Speakers
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Six USB 2.0, Two FireWire
  • Vista Home Premium 64-bit

    Dell Optiplex 160 Desktop

Dell is not solely focusing on the notebook business as it unveils its Dell Optiplex 160 Desktop. Desktops are not yet passé and branded ones such as the one being catered by Dell are sure to be still in demand. And with that notion, Dell aims to deliver powerful packages as preferred by desktop users today.

These days, $500 to $1,500 will net you a desktop with a dual-core CPU and enough power to run productivity apps, view and edit vacation photos, manage MP3s and videos, and even play many of today’s games, the core activities most common to families, students, and the general purpose PC user.

At $1,000 and up, you should easily be able to perform those tasks. Spend around $500, and in most cases you’ll still be able to run common tasks without delay, although 3D gaming becomes a stretch. You will definitely find a dual-core chip in a $500 desktop but Microsoft Vista could still give you trouble.

Be sure the PC is equipped with at least 1GB of memory, and it’s a good bet that you’ll be able to smoothly run Vista. Add in a 128MB graphics card, and you’ll get the Aero effects with little to no performance loss.

So with those facts and figures, you do the math. Surely, notebooks do cost much, but invest that amount in a wiser desktop and you get a more powerful desktop solution in one.

    Price: $563.00

Samsung Releases New External DVD Writer

Samsung has released a new external DVD writer in the market, the SE-S084B series. This is a tray-type DVD writer that comes in seven color choices, and was specially designed to meet market demand for external DVDs particularly for lacking laptop requirements that need the assistance of backing up files and making more space for files.

The SE-S084B series uses a solitary interconnect cable for both data transmission and power supply, and weighs less than 0.4kg for easy transportation. It also adopts a lead-free soldering technology to further reduce the carbon footprint while making it safer to dispose of a few years down the road.

With this new release, expect other storage solutions to follow. We have seen a lot of them in the market today but until now, the marketability and feasibility of turning to external drives has not been realized until now. With larger files and embedded storage space on the PC or the usual notebooks, these external writers are not being groomed as the solution to address the said needs.

You can pick up the SE-S084B series in a 8X DVD+R and DVD-R writer, a 6X DVD+R and -R Dual Layer writer, and a 5X DVD-RAM writer models, with each of them retailing for $79.99.
