Ahanix Platinum XP Case Review

Review Date: September 7, 2002
Reviewed by: Dwayne Sessom
Manufacturer: Ahanix

Not many people have actually heard of "Ahanix", but they make some of the best PC cases on the market right now. A few examples include the Noblesse and dboX, as well as the Platinum XP that I am reviewing today. These guys are truly on the cutting edge of innovation in the PC case arena. Here is the company bio straight from their website:
"Headquartered in Paramount, California, Ahanix Corporation has become a leading distributor of innovative and stylish PC cases in North America. The days of the 486 processors are long gone, but the design and quality of computer cases in the market have not changed since. We saw Intel and Microsoft take the lead in PC technology and Cisco revolutionize the networking industry. We at Ahanix aim to do the same to the case industry: to bring style, design, and functionality together as one.

Leading manufacturers have succeeded in producing quality cases, but have failed to maintain the same level of quality in design and style. Consumers were left with no choice but to choose lower quality cases for the sake of design and fashion. Ahanix aims to give the consumer products on the cutting edge of design and innovation and provide the highest standard of quality. Ahanix continues to offer consumers exciting new ways to enhance their computing experience. New products are consistently in development to offer unique and innovative solutions for maximizing convenience, efficiency, and style. Our products make computing an experience, not a task. Ahanix is a rare company with a unique ideology, seeking partnerships that will expand our vision."

Upon opening the box, it is immediately apparent that this case was made with the PC enthusiast in mind. The design is very modern with silver and gray color scheme, two 5 1/4 bays with fold down doors to hide your DVD/CD drives, and a kickass LCD temperature display on the front of the case. Very nice!

After working with quite a few aluminum cases lately, it is nice to see a solid steel case. Everything about this case reflects the quality and craftsmanship that all Ahanix cases have. The quality is most apparent in the LCD display in the front of the case. The LED's are very bright, and the casing around the LCD display is metal instead of plastic.

This is a closer look at the LCD temp display in the front of the case, with and without LEDs on. These have got to be the brightest LEDs that I have ever seen on a stock PC case!

Features

Seeing a 5 1/4" drive bay door to hide your DVD or CD rom drive isn't unusual these days, but the Platinum XP comes with two of them! Drive stealthing is pretty popular among case modders and the overclocking crowd, so this is nice to see in a stock case. No need to remove the cover plate from your DVD/CD drive either, because these bay doors are large enough for just about any cover plate to pass through.

Thumb screws are used to secure the side panels on both sides. This is great because they eliminate the need for a screwdriver.
Inside the case we find an instruction booklet, a bag of screws, and an extra 5 1/4" bay cover.

The inside of the case is very roomy and has space for four 5 1/4 drives, one floppy drive, and four hard drives. The drive bays have double rolled edges to prevent getting cut by sharp metal edges.

The Platinum XP comes with two 80mm case fans. One is on the front (intake) and one on the rear (exhaust). The fans can be run at high or low speed via he "Turbo" fan switch on the front of the case on the LCD display housing. The PC speaker was not attached to the case, but you can stick it anywhere you want. Personally, I toss them in the garbage. The mess of wires you see includes the standard power, reset, and LED leads, and also includes leads for external USB and firewire ports.

Here is another shot of the drive bays inside the case. The pic on the right is the external firewire and USB ports that are located on the lower right hand side of the case. This is very handy if you want to connect USB or firewire devices without having to get to the backside of your PC.

Conclusion:

The Ahanix Platinum XP case is an outstanding choice for anyone who wants their PC to stand out from the crowd. It was the one of the first PC cases to come from the factory with an LCD temp monitor and display as standard equipment, and the quality of this case is evident everywhere you look. A few things that could be improved would be to included more 3 1/2" drive bays. There is room in this case to add at least 2 more bays, if not 3 or 4. Another thing that I didn't like is that there was no power supply. While this is not unusual, I see less expensive cases come with rather nice PSU's, so I think it would be a nice addition whether the PSU was top quality or not...at least you would get one.

Overall, I give the Platinum XP 4 out of 5 X's.
