Abit Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200 VS Ti4400

We all know that the nVidia GeForce4 Ti4600 is king of the hill...at least for the moment. But here at PCExtreme, we are more concerned about the "Bang for the buck" factor, so that tosses the Ti4600 right out the window. So we are left with its 2 smaller siblings, the Ti4400 and the Ti4200. I chose Abit's Siluro line of cards because I am a huge Abit fan, and these things just look downright mean.

At the moment, the Siluro Ti4400 is going for about $240.00 USD and the Siluro Ti4200 is right at $145.00 USD.

We will start with the Ti4200. It comes equipped with 64MB of DDR 128bit memory, VGA Out, S-Video out, and DVI outputs. THe GPU clock speed is 250Mhz. I don't like the fact that there are no ramsinks, but the blue PCB looks nice, especially under UV light. I especially like the heatsink/fan setup on the Siluro. They work extremely well, and they look better that any other stock HSF out there, in my opinion.

Our next contender is the Siluro Ti4400. For the extra $100, you get 128MB of DDR 128bit memory and ramsinks. The GPU clock speed is 275Mhz, which is just 25Mhz faster than the Ti4200. The most impressive thing about the Siluro Ti4400 is its looks. This time we get black PCB with the kickass Siluro heatsink and fan which is complemented nicely by the ramsinks on both front and back of the card.

The front of the cards are exactly identical. 15pin VGA output, S-Video output, and DVI output.

Chipset Triangles per Second: Fill Rate: Operations per Second: Memory Bandwidth: Core Speed Memory Speed Memory:
GeForce4 Ti 4600 136 Million 4.8 Billion AA Samples/Sec. 1.23 Trillion 10.4GB/Sec. 300 650 DDR 128MB
GeForce4 Ti 4400 125 Million 4.4 Billion AA Samples/Sec. 1.12 Trillion 8.8GB/Sec. 275 550 DDR 128MB
GeForce4 Ti 4200 113 Million 4 Billion AA Samples/Sec. 1.03 Trillion 7.1GB/Sec. 250 444 DDR 64MB

Here are the stock specs for the entire GF4 Ti series. I have included the Ti4600 just for reference.
Now, lets see what these cards will really do...

Test rig:
  • Pentium4 1.6A @ 2.4Ghz
  • MSI 845Ultra-ARU
  • 512MB PC2100 DDR
  • (2X) Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM hard drives in RAID-0
  • WinXP Pro
  • Detonator 30.82 drivers.

This is the Ti4400 right out of the box. No tweaking, no overclocking.

Ti4200, again right out of the box with no tweaks or overclocking.

And just for the hell of it, I thought I would throw in a GeForce2 GTS just for comparison.

Now we are gonna overclock these babies and see what they will really do. To overclock them, I simply used the coolbits registry key right here. and increased the core clock and memory frequencies.

The Ti4400 easily overclocked to Ti4600 specs, and here is the result. Not shabby for a Ti4400.
Too bad I didn't record this with MadOnion, it would have put me on the "Fastest Webmasters" list...

Here is the Ti4200 at Ti4400 specs. Not bad, but it didn't score as high as a stock Ti4400.

Vulpine Benchmarks:

This is the Ti4200 at stock speed. I forgot to get a screenshot of the stock Ti4400, so we will go by this reference for stock score.

The best score I achieved with the Ti4200, which was overclocked to 275/550.

The Ti4400 fared much better in comparison, and literally blew Ti4200 little brother away.

Conclusion:

Well I guess you pretty much get what you pay for, so its going to depend on how much cash you are willing to dish out. The Ti4200 is nice, but I would have to say that the Ti4400 is the better "Bang-for-buck" card, with double the memory and faster clockspeed, the Siluro Ti4400 can easily run at Ti4600 spec and then some. The Ti4200 doesn't even come close. I think the ramsinks on the Ti4400 help tremendously, and give the card a definite edge. So if you are debating between the Ti4200 and Ti4400, definitely go with the Ti4400. It is worth the extra $95 in my opinion, and I am giving it our highest rating possible - 5X's.
