Fix a scratch on the LCD Screen

lcd monitor.jpg

Every few years, the standards that are associated with computer peripherals change. For example, the previous CD-Rom standards were upgraded to CD writers, then it became DVD drives and the now, the accepted standard are DVD writers.LCD monitors are the new standard in computer displays. Though they have not yet replaced CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors completely, LCD monitors are fast rising in popularity because of their extremely sleek looks, lower power consumption and more convenient footprint on a desk.

LCD monitors at this point are still quite expensive though and thus, extra care should be given to the unit so that it will maintain its pristine condition.

Probably the most important part that should be taken care of in an LCD monitor is the screen itself. The screen is not as tough as the glass tube of a CRT. If you have an LCD screen you will notice that only a clear, thick plastic separates your fingers from the actual components of the LCD. It is imperative that you take care of your LCD screen as much as possible and prevent it from being scratched.

There is a way though of repairing a scratched LCD screen though that is inexpensive and very easy. All you need is Vaseline petroleum jelly to fill the scratch on the LCD screen. This very simple remedy works because the optical density of Vaseline more closely matches the LCD face compared to air.

All you need to do is to clean the surface of the screen and then take some Vaseline and fill the scratch with it. Gently wipe off the excess Vaseline taking care not to wipe too forcefully so that you leave some inside the scratch.

Wow – it actually worked! Thank you so much – I honestly thought I was going to need a new monitor.

  2. admin says:

No problem, glad it worked for you!

  3. step says:

hi. im tring to do that with my laptop monitor.. will it work on my laptop monitor? and the scratches are little deep. can u please tell me if it will show clear after the Vaseline petroleum jelly dries?? will it leave any marks?? and will it look like there was no scratch??
    thank you

  4. Dale says:

No go here. The scratch isn’t as intrusive but still noticeable. It was a deep scratch to begin with, one of those “it wasn’t me dad” scratches!!!! :)

  5. Marek says:

Can I use this method on my notebook LCD TFT (X-black)??
    Wouldn’t vasaline damage the LCD?

  6. acclamator55 says:

wow , who would have “thunk it”.

  7. ASAbeth says:

Will it work on PSP monitors

    ?

  8. szalinski says:

    Again with the ambiguities!

“All you need to do is to clean the surface of the screen and then take some Vaseline and fill the scratch with it. Gently wipe off the excess Vaseline taking care not to wipe too forcefully so that you leave some inside the scratch.”

I thought the whole idea was to fill the scratch with vaseline AND HENCE leave some vaseline inside it…??

Unless “…taking care not to wipe too forcefully so that you leave some inside the scratch” is a reference to leaving bits of cloth or cotton swab inside the scratch…?

  9. Danny says:

The best method of all, which is tried and tested is:

    1) Get some wadded BRASSO (Yes!) and rub some onto the damaged surface in a circular motion applying slight pressure, (make sure the scratch is covered).

    2) Get a DREMEL (or a drill but be careful!) and put a buffer piece in and with a bit of patience (and buffering) a scatch (even deep) will be gone.

For Deeper Scatches process may need to be repeated.
But after first usage you should see noticable results (if using right).

  10. George says:

These are all good tricks for DIY with Zero skils…especially the vaseline one. the point is with the vaseline it is not permanant and needs re-doing every time you wipe your screen. If you pus some more effort you can achieve perfect results.

I’ve repaired many monitors (amongst other things) wsing the following twchnique.

    Materials needed:
    1. a DREMEL with a felt cone bit (not essencial but makes does the job so much quicker…in less than a minute).
    2. Automotive Rubbing compound (toothpaste does the job too, but a lot slower! BRASSO is good too but you have to clean it very well.
    3. A piece of thick paper with a 5mm hole in the midle
    4. one aerosol of clear laquer.

once you have all these, the process is very quick.

Put some rubbing compound on the cratch and polish iit until it goes flat!
In most cases the scratch is a deep one (otherwise it would’nt be visible when the screen is on) so when you finish polishing, you will notice the polished area is a bit uneven with the rest of the screen. If you look closer you will see that you have actually gone through the anti-glare coating. so time to fill the gap.

Clean the area very well!! Then take the bit of paper and place it over the scratch. DO NOT LET IT TOUCH THE SCREEN, just keep it a few mm away. Shake the lacquer and splay little puffs through the hole. you can move the paper to cover a long scratch.

Let it dry and switch on the monitor to see the result.

Now what wou will end up with isa small shiny area where the scratch used to be but it will be hardly noticable when the screen is on. If you still find it annoying spray a few puffs of lacquer from a distance to create a mat effect…better practise in a piece of glass first.

Well thats about it…and depending on how good you are in these things…the results can be amazing. This will work on any LCD TFT screen.

    • austin says:

George. I got the dremmel, the rubbing compound, and aerosol. But dremmel keeps spinning out the rubbing compound. Do I keep going? I’m a little nervous since the scratch is very deep, and I don’t want to do more damage.

  14. louie says:

hello….. Where can i buy a Vaseline Petroleum Jelly? Will it fade a Scratch that appears a Rainbow Effect on White, Light-Colored Background? Thanks.

  15. Eric says:

I have a matte LCD screen and the Vaseline method worked well. The scratch (caused by the careless movement of a power drill – ouch) is still visible, but not nearly as much as it was. It’s a good, cheap fix for minor scratches

  16. narelle says:

Hi, the scratch on my lcd tv is clear as in no pixels showing so it is always white. will the vasaline work for this too.

  17. GuitarBizarre says:

Szalinski, while I’m sure that made sense when you posted it, theres nothing wrong with the post in the regard you attempt to claim. Its just because you can’t fing read.

  19. Angel says:

After almost having a heart attack when I discovered a big scratch(8-9″) and little dent mark, left by a pen, created by my 3 years old daughter on my 24″ LCD DELL monitor. I decided to go and google a solution and to tell you the truth most solution are very scary. From chemicals to Rain x to scratch off with a blade. I decided to try on my own an eraser from a brand new pencil. Very softly and without putting hardly any pressure at all, using a back and forward motion try to work your way to erase the mark and belive it or not it made the scratch and dent disappeared then using a microfiber cloth, the type to clean eye glasses I finish cleaning the screen.Leaving no blemishes whatsoever I hope this is helpful for somebody. note: an old eraser may be hard and create abrassion.

    • Ashli says:

AMAZING! The mechanical pencils with the white soft erasers worked a wonder on my brand new LG 42” LED LCD tv. I was freaking out because my son hit a toy against the tv and I saw this scratch, which was somewhat light but 1-1/2 inches long. I went to the computer immediately and saw use a pencil lightly. I went back and forth and up and down once and then cleaned with a LCD monitor cleaner and microfiber cloth. Still was there a little bit, did it again a little long but just as light…cleaned again.. GONE! Am sooo happy and thankful. Thank you!

  20. John says:

theres a small scratch on my 64 inch sharp aquos, only noticable when turned off. Any ideas, suggestions?

  21. hojnibk says:

That really helped. But that only a shor therm solution.Becouse if you clean your screen with some liquids
the vasaline will go off and scratch will be back.

  22. daniel says:

umm my lcd was throne out of my car at like 55 mph in a bad wreck ……………. it has three deep scratches will this method sill work in these conditions?

  23. Luca says:

This worked amazingly well, I can’t even tell there was a scratch there before. My scratches were fairly light though, but this is about a 30 second fix and I’m quite happy with the results. Thank you so much!

  24. SJ says:

I have been searching for a good solution and read about this method, but after finally trying it I have to say (for minor scratches) this method works (and if you don’t freak about minor specks/don’t clean your monitor often) it pretty much is a fix, besides its better then pulling out the tools and going to town on the scratch.I actually tried the pencil method (it might have done something but it was a mechanical pencil with white eraser) and the rubbing alcohol (all I had was witch hazel – which in combination with the pencil eraser might have done something but not noticably) After putting the vaseline on there it practically vanished before my eyes. Much easier to enjoy the monitor now. I was thinking like other people and going for abrasives like toothpaste or fine grit sandpaper, even a straight razor blade, however I ignored that little voice in my head (primarily thanks to the $230 spent on the monitor) and the vaseline removed the minor scratch and it is hardly visible unless I focus in on it. I suggest this method for anyone with Minor scratches, not incredibly deep. Mind you my scratch was deep enough to feel with the fingernail but not so deep that it would fit in, so that should be how you judge it and go about fixing it. Replacing the monitor is a waste of hardware, money, and time. This scratch, as (apparently) many other scratches, were caused by either kids or not carefully moving the monitor. I thought I was going to have to stare at that scratch for ages. But this worked fine! Don’t accept No as an answer, try everything! Thanks!

    • Courtney says:

Thanks I just erased the scratch (though I still don’t understand how it worked) while I was at school…at first it wasn’t working but then it went right away!!! I didn’t use rubbing alcohol because I’m at school and it still worked …Just wondering..what does the rubbing alcohol do?

  25. TO says:

What a great solution for minor scratches.
Nice one, when you have kids ;-)

  26. Candy-Man says:

YAY!!!!! It totally Worked!!! I got My PSP used so it was pretty banged up and so i used the Vaseline on the ENTIRE screen and it’s all shiny now!!! :) Thanks Man!!!

  27. JK says:

Thanks! I have a little scratch (not deep) in my Apple Cinema HD Display. I used your vaseline trick and it worked very well. The scratch disappeared completely.

  28. Jeff M. says:

It looks like I put a hole in the fairly hard plastic screen on my brand new 37″ LCD TV. I let a tape measure go from 10 feet out and it whipped back and put a hole through the plastic about 1/16″ wide. It now shows white when viewing dark images. I took a sharp pencil and shaded the entire area with graphite. It is much better now. Light scenes show a slightly dark area but it is better than the other way around. Any suggestions on a better fix?

  29. Randy says:

Mineral oil worked for me. A tiny bit on a q-tip, one wipe and the scratch disappeared.

  30. Mike says:

Hi I have LCD Sony Bravia and there is a scratch on the TV. So do you think this method will help me too????
    Thank you.

  31. Lorilei says:

After my 3 year old scratched my husband’s 37 inch lcd tv, hubby went ballistic. I tried a NEW white mechanical pencil eraser, and even though the scratch is still a little noticeable, it’s not nearly as bad as it was. Not even gonna try Vaseline. Thanks!

  32. Shaun says:

hey my sharp aquos got hit by a lamp and i dont know if its a scratch. The scratch looks light brown the vasaline remedy didnt work.

  33. Fred says:

How do you fix the scratch on a CRT Monitor?

  34. Bryan says:

The vaseline trick worked! Hanns-G 24 inch monitor… Thanks!

  35. Donald says:

    Mike,

I just fixed some scratches on a Sony XBR LCD using a new pencil eraser (the light red/pink colored standard pencil eraser). Once I was done with the eraser, I just used a damp cloth to wipe the screen down and they are all gone completely. I cannot even find where they were anymore and I am a very picky person about blemishes. I am amazed at how well it worked.

I have read that the pencil eraser does not work for some people but I can tell you for a fact that it worked for me on a new SONY XBR perfectly.

  36. Kali says:

right when i cleaned the screen, the scratch went away…weird?

  37. Jim says:

Worked for me too! I was real aggravated looking at the scratch my daughter left on our 46 inch tv while trying to dust. Thanks for the tip.

  38. SAiKoU says:

I tried it on my acer lcd monitor & uploaded images of my result.
I’m very satisfied with the “vaseline remedy” =) it’s still visible against white but just barely against colored/dark.

  44. Ken says:

I keep hearing that the vaseline works, will it work on my 40 in. LCD tv that my 3 yr. old swiped a finger nail file acrossed? Tv is only 1 month old

  45. Adam says:

    Thanks Man :)

Huge Gash in my screen while moving it, you can barely notice it now!

Tip: Microfibre cloths are great for cleaning and don’t damage the screen, get them from a hardwae store :)

  46. cathy says:

This seems to work for us; the pencil technique!! We just bought a 40 inch TV and we have two boys who are 3 and 6 years old. The TV being only 2 weeks old had quite a few scratches as a result. Yes, the kids are still alive. :)

  47. jon says:

what about a small nick in my vizio LCD its very small like the tip of a ball point pen but i notice it alot while watch you think it will help me out.

  48. Jeremy says:

Alright the wife was up moving the antenna and let it slide off the entertainment center. Now i got 2 Very small no more then quarter Inch scratches on our 37in. LCD TV Wouldn’t bother me any except where they hit are now WHITE!!! Any Ideas on how to fix that? any help would be great

  49. Wouter says:

I read that the vaseline remedy is fine for superficial scratches, but has anyone tried it on depper scratsches that look white all the time when the TV is turned on? And if this doesn’t work for it, what can I do?

  50. Stefan says:

    Hi all,

The Pencil technique worked fine on my Toshiba LCD TV.

Thanks to whoever had the idea.

    Cheers

To the original pc freak who posted this 3 years ago-
My son can thank you for saving his life. I found a web of gouges from a usb cable on my mac this morning. plastic polish didn’t do much, so i searched for a solution. Vaseline? wow. amazing.
    Thank you.

  52. Scott says:

Wow the vaseline fix is amazing, It really helped with the scratch. I read somewhere that wrights silver polish could be used so I bought some at walmart today but decided to research a little more first. I saw the post about using the vaseline and decided to try this before opening the polish and was very impressed by it. The scratch is not completely gone but unless I am looking for the scratch I can’t even see it. Worth trying this first if you have a scratch because most of us have vaseline in the house since woman use it for makeup removal and also used if you have a baby around.

  53. erika says:

My 7 year old niece just took a pair of fingernail scissors and CARVED UP my flat screen. I jumped on google to see what could be done and saw the vaseline suggestion. Just tried it. It doesn’t take away the scratches , but I must say it does lighten or minimize them.

  54. Mandy says:

Got a chipped LCD Tv, as if someone has thrown white paint all over it, can anybody help.

  55. John Bink says:

Umm I have a Lcd screen on my camera and i tried rubbing the vaseline on it and it didnt work right away. How long should I rub it before I start seeing progress? help please

  56. Kono says:

John, you should see progress right away, vaseline isnt an abrasive or a cleanser its just used to get in the scratch itself.

Had a nasty nick in my moniter, still visible when i look for it but its not nearly as bad. if anyone has a more complete solution that would be great.

  57. Nilly123 says:

How long should I let it sit

    • KJ says:

The point is to apply it into the scratch and leave it there. It will go when you clean the screen and then you have to do it all over again. The vaseline is just a temporary solution.

  58. Nilly123 says:

Will this work with my iPod touch LCD screen

  59. T ReX says:

Holy crap I actually used the eraser trick and it worked I used a soft white eraser in a circular motion with a little pressure and you can hardly tell there was a scratch. I found the pink eraser too abrasive though.

  60. gordo says:

would this method work with a blackberry storm?

  61. matt pyke says:

lol well i got a 40 inch lcd and i drank, then woke up and there was a deep white scratch that looks like a mouse cerser onn it, im in middle of getting a upgrade to a 52 but if the store sees that scratch i dont think they will do it ,, i just cant see how any of this would work,,, it maakes no sencee

  62. soua says:

    Wow – the erasor worked..unbelievable!

  63. johnson yip says:

I have a apple monitor that was given to me and I had scratches all over it and I tried the mineral oil cause I had it under the sink for my wood spoons and cutting boards… I used it with the Q-tip on the scratches and I can not see them while the computer is on at all. Very nice…

  66. george says:

tried the vaseline on a 1/4 inch scratch that was (of course) right in the middle of my inspiron dell 1010 notebook—it took it right out

  67. Mo says:

    It worked thanks man

  68. Kent says:

My cat had made a tiny scratch on my brand new LCD screen. A new and soft eraser completly fixed it. (the scratch wasn’t that deep, but anoying)

So, to the guy who came up with this ¨solution; I LOVE YOU! ;)

  69. Mark says:

I tried the eraser method and that didn’t work, I haven’t tried the Vaseline thing yet but will try it and see what happens The Scratch is not that deep on my LCD so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

  70. Jill says:

I have a 32″ Samsung LCD. My 3 year old son was playing with a ping pong ball sized rock and threw it and it hit the tv stand..I should have taken it away, cos after a scolding he did it again and hit the tv. Im not sure if its a scratch or a crack…I don’t have vaseline but had some Anuzinc hemmohroid cream LMAO… its simmilar in consistency to vaseline and its clear. Well it didnt get rid of the mark but I no longer see a small pixilated line when there is a picture on the tv…I guess I will just have to keep the tv on at all times when hubby is home. The tv is less then a year old, and hubby freacks about finger prints on it …oooops lol

  71. richard says:

no 2 pencil eraser worked great for my sharp aquos 37″ lcd took out a big scuff mark that water and my micro-fiber wouldnt touch. looks brand new

  72. charlie says:

I bumped into my new 24″ monitor with my RC chopper and scratched it. Thought it was the end of the nice screen. Skip the eraser/vaseline/toothpaste stuff and get a hold of some iklear cleaning cloths. It came right out, I can’t even find the scratch anymore. The wet cloth is only for cleaning and leaves some streaking, but once you gently rub with the dry cloth for 10 seconds the scratches disappear along with the streaks from the wet cloth. Great solution. I was amazed.

  73. Steve says:

Is it possible to use a combination of Eraser AND Vaseline?

  74. Corey says:

My four and seven year old scratched the monitor on our car entertainment system and after using the petroleum jelly, it looks brand new again. I have learned my lesson, I am buying a screen protector tomorrow!

  76. Cassandra Gedye says:

Our 2yr old son decided to get creative one day with a flat-head screwdriver and my husband’s brand new 24″ LCD Monitor = deep long scrawling scratches + 1x very pissed off husband. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated…

  77. Gene says:

would you believe a very small of supper glue & Vasaline in the scratch does the repair but very sure its a very small amount, like on the head of a pin.

  78. Tonita says:

Wow, I just noticed a scratch on my 42inch LCD that the kids have no idea as to how it got there!! But anyway, I did a search on how to remove scratches from flat screens and came across this site. I didn’t have any vaseline on hand at home, so I opt to try the eraser method!!! I must say that this absolutely works. The scratch is completely gone. This is amazing!! Thanks a lot for the tip!!

  79. kelly says:

i took a chance a used a tiny drop of baby oil and it seemed to work

  80. kelly says:

the oil will still be there so i would just use a damp cloth and clean the screen and it seemed to get rid of the scratch…at least i dont see it like i used to…….thanks so much everyone for the tips…..

  81. Gerry says:

My Girlfriends son who is Ten got angry with his wii game as it wouldn’t work so he thought that if he run the remote across the tv screen it would solve the problem, now I have the figure of eight scratched into my screen and sorry the Vaselene tip didn’t work but thanks anyway I guess I will have to buy a new TV. He has been grounded for a Month !

  82. Flobbort says:

Tried a combo of above for my SUV’s inbuilt Sat-Nav Display, scratched by a tipsy brother on a photographic safari!
I first used a Dremel buffing tip with brasso. Bad idea. It did reduce the scratch somewhat, but also made more micro scratches around the area and deepened parts of the existing scratch into the next layer of film on the LCD.
I put Vaseline on afterwards and it’s looking better. Good enough to have a chance of disguising it when I sell the vehicle. But if I place my eyes where there’s light directly refracting from the scratch, it’s still there plain-as-day (This may not usually be so evident with indoor TV’s and Monitors).
I would not recommend doing anything invasive on a sensitive Touch Display such as this. Rather just use Vaseline until you’re 100% sure that you wont make the problem worse.
As for that guy suggesting to spray lacquer on a Display, well, at least I’m not that dumb.

  83. tom says:

i dunno, not much seems to work…..two very small nicks (scatches) on dell lcd but not that you can feel by running fingernail across….it’s almost like the scratch or whatever is on the inside of the screen…i see some green coming thru the scatch….any thoughts?

  84. Pill says:

I had a deep 6 inch scratch on my monitor from my 3 yr old. Don’t leave a chair near your monitor when they’re this age. I tried vaseline and the pencil eraser first but didn’t help, so I got an earbud (q-tip) out with some whitening toothpaste. After a while it started looking better but I could still notice it. That’s where i should have stopped. A while later, I saw some lacquer in a shop and tried George’s tip. When I turned the monitor on, at the edge where I sprayed, it looked like when you have water residue on your monitor and can see the individual red, green and blue pixels, except they NEVER go away. Unless you REALLY know what you’re doing, stick with the vaseline and pencil eraser trick and maybe the dremel – but be warned about the lacquer.

  85. karthik says:

  88. Eric says:

Thanks. The vaseline worked like magic and its cheap. I thought I was going to have to buy a $180.00 replacement part but this trick will prevent that exspense. Wow, the vaseline is invisible. Thanks.

  89. Hunter says:

    Angel,
I read your comment anout the eraser and it made me laugh, at firt i thought it was BS until I tried it and my scratches are gone!!

  90. Megan says:

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I am wondering if you know if it would work on my LCD screen on my Nikon camera? It’s a new camera (got it about 2 weeks ago), and the scratches seem to have mysteriously appeared! I flipped out when I saw the few light scratches, so I’m anxious to give this a shot!

  91. Abbas says:

Really worked for me……. But if i view it from side.. the scratch is visible… from front its not.. any idea to make it disappear from side view???

  92. Bob says:

My scratch continues to expand. How do you stop the scratch from expanding?

  93. mary says:

The eraser actually works! A six foot level, that was leaning up against wall, was knocked over when we were moving furniture. It fell onto the 46″ Sharp LCD, that was our x mas present, from two feet away. We took a simple desk eraser and ever so gently erased the scratch.

  94. Cheddered says:

Well slap me silly and call me nancy!

The pencil eraser trick worked… and on some pretty serious scratches.

(i think it must be some sort of VooDoo, as what i have just seen with my own two eyes, is in my opinion…. impossible!

  95. ray says:

Would this work on a psp screen?

  96. James says:

Didn’t work. My screen was hit with an Ipod. It looks like theres a hole in the film on window tint. Nothing but white light is seen. Any ideas?

  97. Richard says:

It hasn’t worked for me, how the hell do you get this to work? I’ve tried putting the vaseline on my samsung sgt25230 Mobile phone and the scratches still remain. Someone please help!

  98. Josh says:

You could always do the Vasaline trick, and then put some sort of anti scratch guard over it so you wouldn’t remove it while cleaning! Anti glare or anti scratch guards are available for monitors and there are a lot of solutions for phones.

  99. Adam says:

After a visit from my sons 4 years old cousin, my brand new 37” LCD TV had a nice 2 inch scratch right down the middle. After resisting the urge to kill, I cleaned it with filtered water and vinegar, rubbed over the scratch with a brand new eraser, cleaned again with the vinegar and water, and finally ran over it with a micro fibre cloth … result … GONE! … another young life is saved by a rubber ;)

Same story as most, aren’t kids great. Mine was my 4 year old daughter with one of those fake arrow heads you can get in a gift store… But anyhow tried the pencil with no luck tried the Vaseline worked on some but not all then a commercial for the Winter Olympics came on. Ski wax!
Didn’t use actual ski wax but I did use paraffin wax (like the stuff used for canning) a blow dryer, and a playing card(used like a trowel) just like waxing your board. It worked pretty damn good. You can’t see them unless you look for them close.

  101. Hermesacat says:

I was about to run to the store & try the Vaseline cure on my “nice new scratch”, then I found another suggestion elsewhere about applying a white pencil eraser to the scratch. I was skeptical it would work, but lo & behold it really did! My scratch was not very deep, & perhaps Vaseline works better on deeper scratches, but the eraser certainly fixed my screen. To be accurate, when I inspect closely, I can see tiny traces still, but it’s definitely 95% better, no longer a distraction, leaving me quite happy!

  102. Hansy says:

Really really really works. This is my first public posting about anything. I have a 37″ LCD flatscreen TV with several child-originated scratches of varying depth, two were at least 5″ long, about a dozen little scratches, pretty noticeable while ON, very noticeable while OFF.

I used a new white eraser and LCD wipes. I GENTLY, briskly went over a small, shallow scratch, back and forth, buffing. It appears to not work at first because the eraser smears a little. Then I used an LCD wipe over it with same motion. I also let one dry in the air (it becomes soft and I imagine resembles a microfiber cloth) and go over it with this after the damp one.

Once it dries, the scratch is gone (virtually gone for the deep ones). I repeated on all, redid where needed, TOOK MY TIME and now I have a scratchless TV. I’m psyched!

  103. suki says:

Thanks for the tip. It worked like a charm~

  105. Key says:

Thanks for the tip. It worked very well. I can’t understand why my daughter would use her eraser on the screen. Got to love eight year olds…

  109. shug says:

I was moving my amp to to clean it, i stood it up in front of my dell 19? lcd moniter turned around and bumped it, it fell and made a inch scratch right in the middle of my screen with the very sharp corner of the amp.
The scratch was more of a gouge, it had taken the polarized surface right out and left me with this white mark , white light and no picture within the damged area. OMG i was sicked with what i had done….so i have pondered this problem for a while, i tried Vasaline and some of the other methods here but nothing could get rid of the white light so i though thats it i would have to buy a new moniter.
Then it came to me 3d cinema glasses, polirised plastic paper, i cut out the plastic lens and placed it over my affected area turned it around and low and behold the color came back to the white light and its looking realy good and now very bearable as it looks 90 times better with no white light, picture restored .
This fix is for very deep white light scratches and il leave it up to you to figure out how to stick the plastic to cover the scratch because i don’t have it permanently fixed , altho the fastest way was to lick it and stick it. the monitor dosent move anywhere so it just sticks .
If you try this i am sure you will be very happy with the results .
    Thanks and good luck!

Will it work on my iPod touch?

  111. Walt says:

PC: tried vaseline. Didn’t work. Also tried a white erasure with no results. The scratch left by my cat is not on the surface, but appears as a damaged line of pixels under the surface of the screen. Is there a fix for this?

  112. khalid says:

    omg this actually worked
i mean you can still see a bit but thats nothing !!
the fact that its covered makes me feel a little relaxed.
next time you got a scratch, think vaseline!!

  113. Yam Erez says:

I’m obsessive about clean screens; I even clean others’ screens before using their computers. The ironclad rule in our house is “Don’t Touch That Screen!”. I was therefore brought to my knees by a scratch I caused while wiping my screen with an old (clean) crew sock, which is what I’ve always used.

I immediately searched “scratched computer screen” and tried the pencil eraser method. After turning off the ‘puter, I erased in little circles, then after breathing on the scratched area, wiped down with an eyeglasses-cleaning cloth. Worked! Scratch invisible from all angles! I’m gonna try it on my eyeglasses, sunglasses, mobile phone display…

  114. GB says:

I just dropped a bookend from about 2ft above an LCD monitor and it left 2 1 inch scratches that would make a ‘click’ as I ran my finger nail over them.
I tried the eraser – took about 3 attempts of maybe 30 secs, on each scratch and they are both virtually gone – less noticable than the dust that keeps settling on it anyway!

  115. chas says:

hi, my LCD screen has a very large scratch after i clean my LCD screen with cloth and water. it’s not deep though, can i repair it with the vaseline petroleum jelly? and what do i use to apply the jelly onto the screen?
pls reply me. thanks very much

  116. lala says:

I tried the Vaseline and i still could see my scratch.
Its not a very large scratch, like a pin you use for holding cloth together. But it was bugging me.

    SO!
I tried the old fashion way and put white toothpaste on it and rub, and you would know, its started to disappear, had to dab the little bits that didn’t get into the crack, but there is was! Or wasn’t!

Maybe it was because my vaseline sucks, but i would try it again for sure, but try the white toothpaste for smaller scratches ;]

  121. Dr. E says:

I’ve got an LCD computer screen with a scratch the size of the end of a pinky nail (the VERY end of it… as if someone jabbed it into the LCD). I tried the eraser trick, and that didn’t do a thing. I then tried the Vaseline and that did marginally better… I’d say it dimished the scratch about 25 to 30% from what it was. I’ll live with the scratch, I’m just surprised that as many people are saying this Vaseline trick works like gold or the scratch is totally gone. Mine is what I’d consider a gouge… you can easily feel it and find it with your eyes closed.

Anyway… good luck with your scratch… you’re going to need it.

  126. Maze says:

“I decided to try on my own an ERASER from a brand new pencil. Very softly and without putting hardly any pressure at all, using a back and forward motion try to work your way to erase the mark and belive it or not it made the scratch and dent disappeared ”

@angel you are my hero :) worked like a charm.

  127. carl says:

start with 80 grit sandpaper with sanding block and move in cirular motion until entire screen is roughed up (for adherance)Now take super glue and spread it all over screen(Dont let it dry too fast)now use a microfiber shammy to buff to a near mint shine

  128. Tony says:

The Vasline trick worked for me. My daugther scratched up the bottom portion of our 60″ toshiba. At first, i applied very little. it was ok. but i could see that it was working. So i applied a more liberal amount. And let it sit for about 10 minutes and gently wiped the excess away. WOW, what a diffrence. I don’t see the scratched unless i’m looking for them. Now it doesn’t take the scratches away, but they aren’t noticeable unless you know where to look at a very close range.

  129. todd says:

oh my lord. you are a god……. thank u so much i realy works
