It is All About Storage in Desktops

If you will notice in desktops, the feature that allows you to upgrade storage in the form of hard disks and optical media players bolsters the need of addressing storage issues. Unlike in laptops where hard disk changing may not always be present, the use of various hard drives such as SATA or SCSI has made all the difference in addressing the storage issue.

Storage for some desktop users would depend on what files they are pointing. Normally, it is not plainly about documents and spreadsheets. With technology offering a lot of things for the modern computer geek, audio, pictures and videos have likewise entered the fray. With that in mind, you can just imagine the space that these files would occupy and normally it can negate the usual gigabyte capacity of hard drives as well.

Laptops are not made for storage of large files. Some of these mobile computers have been equipped with higher capacity drives these days but you will notice the timing. They only offer larger storage after some time. At this age, we are already exposed to larger capacity drives, perhaps double than what laptops can carry. Why? For one thing, laptops are not designed to be storage space. They are made for assisting mobile users and not the hardcore programmer or designers.

So the next time you are wondering why desktops differ from laptops, just look beyond what they have to offer. The specifications are there but you need to look further. Storage is only one part of the entire picture for their variance.

Why I Prefer a Desktop Over a Laptop

For some years now, I still prefer to use a desktop over a laptop. Perhaps a lot of it is due to the fact that I am not a mobile person meaning I would prefer to stay in one secluded place to work rather than carry a notebook and find places such as Starbucks or any socially populated place where I can work as I wish. Sad to say, I prefer to be pinned to one place with no one to bother me.

This reasoning will surely draw a lot of criticism. For one, desktops are bulky (although there has been a lot of modified designs these days), making it impractical to transfer or bring along wherever you may be. The choice of whether you want to use a desktop or laptop hence depends on the nature of your work. If you are the blogger or programmer, you would want to have a desktop in one place where you can just sit down, focus and do your work.

Laptops on the other hand are for the mobile executives. Normally you would see people in sales or executives who rarely stay in the office as having them. They are not the type who will use a computer to do programming or even graphics designing. They need these laptops to aid them in presentations or even in receiving and sending email.

So as far as determining on which you would want, don’t just consider the price. Be practical and select the one that suits your needs. It is all about defining what you really need as far as computers are concerned.

If You Cannot Sell it, Donate It

One thing you will notice in most auction sites is that old computers are being offered for sale at a lower price. The idea here is to be able to buy new computers with the help of additional funding from selling an old desktop and get any amount of salvage value that they can.

However today, people are done with this kind of a practice. Many have realized that sooner or later, old or used computers will go passé and eventually, they will buy new ones which if you think about it, accumulates more than saving on a second-hand PC. A slow down in the purchase of these second hand PCs is obvious these days as most people are finding it hard to determine ways to dispose of their old units as they are determined to get new PC sets.

For the people who have working desktops, if you cannot sell it, then why not donate them to schools or orphanages for kids to be able to use. You don’t get anything out of it but it does count as a good deed rather than throwing it away for nothing. Contributing to the needs of the less fortunate is something that can warm your heart and rather than counting the dollars, count the number of good things you do that can lighten your soul.

Most schools need computers. We see them in the news asking for donations from large companies. But while they have to wait for such a request to be granted, do not leave your old computer at home. Donate that PC for a worthy cause.

The Role of Computers in Healthcare

We can see the vast improvement of technology in healthcare these days. Other than speeding up the diagnostic procedures, computer aids have helped provide accurate and faster analysis of tests and procedures pertinent towards being able to tell what is exactly wrong with a person who feels something wrong with him.

We see computers in the medical world today. Ranging from the usual laboratory procedures to the advanced imaging needed by radiological services, pinpoint accuracy is what computers are able to provide. Some of them don’t even have to be the high end ones at that. You would be surprised that most of these computers make use of old computers like the first storm of Pentium computers.

A lot of this is due to the fact that not all programs used by medical technology require a Windows platform. Most of them can make do with the standard DOS OS and are usually compiled with old school programs such as FoxPro. Though these programs may sound outdated, it is how they are able to provide medical reports to physicians and specialists that is important. Today, you can get results in an hour rather than waiting a whole day to know what the test results were able to show.

Technology in the medical field is sure to advance all the more. With computer technology fast showing what it can do to assist us, it should not be surprising how far we can achieve more towards monitoring and safeguarding our lives. And we have computers and peripherals to thank for all of it.

Lenovo Making Big Risk on Desktop Market

Practically all companies today are apprehensive on the flow of the market and for Lenovo, taking another crack at a faltering marketing in the desktop division seems to be a move that will certainly draw varied criticism on the timing of its market penetration efforts towards the desktop computing sector.

Apparently, the risk is quite high. No one knows what the future of the desktop computing industry will hold. But with their fingers crossed, apparently Lenovo is banking on a turn for the better any time soon, making a move that most companies would save for later when something clearer sets forth.

Lenovo which bought the PC division of IBM in 2004, has been a prominent figure in the laptop market. With its brand, its association with IBM is something that has carried it towards strides in better business. But as far as desktop computing is concerned, it can really be seen as something as starting once again from scratch.

To kick off their campaign, they have introduced into the market the IdeaCentre K210 Desktop last June 30 towards the consumer desktop market outside of China. But the weird thing about it all is that while other large computer companies are shifting towards mobile solutions, Lenovo is moving towards the opposite direction.

From a strategical management standpoint, you may call it catering towards the remaining customers in the desktop industry. For sure there is still a wide open market for it. But the question is on whether this investment will pay off. Perhaps Lenovo has seen something that other have not. Only time will tell if the investment risk will indeed reap dividends.

Tiny Compressors for Better PC Cooling to be launched

The temperature levels in most computers today have a significant impact on a PC’s performance. We know of the usual auxiliary fans required to serve as added ventilation but in some cases, the proper cooling for these chips are not enough. Cooling is important and while the fans are trying hard to negate the rising heat levels from using internal chips and processors, Purdue University has reportedly developed a tiny refrigeration system that will surely help a lot as far as CPU temperature levels is concerned.

This is indeed a welcome development considering that many people are forever relying on additional cooling systems for their CPU or laptops.

“Traditionally, you use a fan to blow air on a chip — room temperature air,” said Garimella. “If I could push chilled air onto the chip, then I get a lot more cooling.” The devices are designed to dramatically increase the amount of heat that can be removed from a computer, he added.

The system pumps refrigerants through tiny compressors and tubing. The technology could be integrated into a microprocessor, or it could replace a computer’s traditional air-cooled heat sink.

The new cooling technique will probably be used first in gaming systems and then in high-end laptops, Garimella projected.

Once this gets out, we can see better enhancements towards our current crop of CPU and cooling issues that seem to continue to haunt us when it comes to identifying the right temperature to assist CPU performance. Purdue professor Suresh Garimela even opened the doors for smaller computers which will garner the nod of people who love to embrace technology and its fruits as they come.

Changing Computer Themes Easily

For most Windows XP users today, there is little to consider as far as changing your current default Windows XP Theme. You can choose between two ways:

The Traditional Way

  1. Go to the Control Panel and look for the Display Icon and double click on it.
  2. Once inside, you will immediately see the current theme which is usually the Windows XP theme. If you click on the field, you will see other default themes. Normally if it is a first time installation and you haven’t downloaded any new themes, only the Windows Classic options theme will be there for you to check out.
  3. If you have downloaded any other themes, just use the browse option and point it to the directory where you placed them. Then save and apply and you get a totally new makeover.

For more themes you can apply, you can go to reliable sites such as Themeworld.com which normally has a number of themes over there that you can download. A word of caution though. There will be a lot of sites offering free theme downloads. Unless you are sure that they are reliable based on recommendations, don’t think of even considering downloading them. They may give you more than a theme like a virus or spyware for your troubles.

The other way is of course right clicking on the main desktop. Once the menu comes out, select properties and you will get the same window as you did for the ones enumerated above. Follow each step as well.
