The need for speed and here it is for Windows XP

To disable unneeded startup services for a safer, faster Windows XP, use the Services Admin Tool (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services).

Do not disable Task Scheduler!

Starting with Windows XP, the Task Scheduler service is used by the system for a number of important functions. The prefetch system relies on this service for it’s operation. If not enabled and set to Automatic, the system will be unable to update entries in the prefetch folder. Over time this can lead to serious impairment of both boot and application launch times.

I’ve disable the Task Scheduler for over a year now. Windows Xp is still running very fast en without problems.
