ThermalTake Xaser III V1000A Case

We have reviewed quite a few PC cases here at PCExtreme over the years, but none quite the caliber of this one. The Xaser III series cases definitely stand out from the rest of the competition, and there are few if any, that can compare with it when it comes to design and features. This is the Cadillac of PC cases. But like all Cadillacs, you pay a premium price to have all the bells and whistles.

The Xaser III is packaged very nicely with styrefoam padding on front and back of the case. On top of that, the entire case is actually shrink wrapped in plastic. This is something I have never seen before with a full sized ATX case, but it does provide extra protection against damage and scratches.

From first glance, it is easy to see that this is a serious case that means business. This thing comes with seven, count 'em, seven 80mm fans already installed. It has a fan controller already installed, and a 3 point temperature LCD. The case shell is steel, but the front bezel is made of heavy cast aluminum and sports a back-lit ThermalTake logo, which by the way, can be replaced with your own custom design if you so desire! Total sweetness...

What's Inside?

After removing the side panel, we can now see what this case is really made of. There is a swing out panel with two 80mm fans mounted to push cool air into the side of the case. They are situated perfectly to cool your video card and PCI cards as well. In addition, there are two more 80mm fans in the rear to exhaust the hot air. One oddity of this case is that the two lower drive cages are turned facing the side panel. After the initial shock of this radical difference, I learned that it was really pretty handy when it came time to attach drive cables and fumble with jumpers!

It might be a little overwhelming to some to see the amount of wiring and cabling that this case is equipped with. There are wires and cables everywhere you look. But, when you take into consideration all the extras this case comes with, it's easy to understand why there are so many!

Along the top of the case, you will find a mess of cables running to a "hidden" panel that contains USB, Firewire, and audio ports. More on this a bit later. On the top rear, there is a pin switch which can be used for "intruder detection" and will tell you if the case panel has been removed. I personally do not use this feature because I am in an out of my case way too much, and resetting the switch every time would be a major hassel.

Along with the other ports in the top panel, there is also an additional 80mm fan. You can never have too many fans in a case, and this case has fans everywhere you look it seems. Very nice!

I would like to give one feature a little special attention. ThermalTake was wise enough to realize that all these fans might cause considerable dust buildup inside the case. So, they designed dust filters for the fans which are removable, and easily cleanable as well. This is actually the first time I have ever seen a stock case that included dust filters, and I thought that this feature was very impressive.
